a Response to the Pandemic

The spread of COVID-19 seemed inevitable in Sarawak, with significant parts of the population very mobile and widely travelled. However, being residents of an island, logistics became a large issue with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

It became very evident in March 2020 that Sarawak was going to suffer a PPE shortage when stocks of Personal Protective Equipment (“PPE”) fell to critical levels. The Sarawak General Hospital, which was the State’s largest dedicated COVID-19 hospital, appealed for donations for PPE.

With two of Jackie’s family members working at the SGH, she immediately mobilized Tanoti’s networks and, together with her brother, established the PPE Project. Fundraising commenced on 27 March 2020 and materials were acquired – the PPE Project started its first day on 28 March 2020 with a Day 1 team of 15 volunteer sewers. It delivered its first batch to the SGH with 539 pairs of bootcovers.

The project closed on 25 May 2020 after raising donations in cash of RM192,133.24 (equivalent to USD44,150) and in-kind contributions in the form of fabrics and sewing supplies. In total, 43,599 pieces of PPE garments were delivered frontliners.

Our Objective

We sought to equip every frontliner within our reach with sufficient and adequate PPE protection. Every PPE garment delivered was donated, so that they would not have any requirement for purchase.

Our Products

Protective garments required by medical and other frontliners to protect them from harmful pathogens. In the early days, we produced very basic items as required by the hospital. Over time, we increased our products base to accommodate the varying needs of different medical personnel. As such, our catalogue of products is dynamic, with certain tweaks and additions made over time. Our current catalogue of items may be viewed here.

We have made our designs opensource and available to anyone wishing to produce PPE garments for frontliners in their localities. Please download them on http://bit.ly/KuchingPPE
