The Belanyat or Ajat is traditionally used by the Penans as they move around in the rainforests and between settlements. Over time, using natural rattan as well as mud-dyed black rattan splits, this basket started to feature fine plaited art as the artisans drew equivalents from objects in their environments and along their journeys.
This Belanyat was hand-plaited by Munjan Jeno of Lusong Laku, Belaga. Each piece is unique and carries the spirit of the forest: functional, soulful and steeped in ancestral wisdom.
