Sarawak’s sago-paste batik

Drawn freehand in sago paste, by four women in a fishing village.

L inut is batik made with sago starch instead of wax, drawn onto cloth with a bamboo pen. It is specific to coastal Sarawak.

The number of people still doing it properly is small enough to count. Tanoti works with the women of Kampung Telaga Air to keep the technique in production rather than in a museum.

Because the paste is drawn by hand and the cloth is dipped by hand, tone varies between dye lots. That variation is the evidence, not the defect.
