Penan basketry · Kubaan Puak, Baram

Harvested, split, scraped and dried by the people who plait it.

S ince 2016 Tanoti has worked with eighteen Penan settlements in the Kubaan Puak area of the Baram, initially through a partnership with WWF-Malaysia.

In 2019 the State Government recognised those settlements as an emerging craft community for basketry. Kleting is the fine coiling technique; belanyat is the carried basket that became the bag.

The rattan is cut in the forest behind the longhouse. Nothing about that supply chain has been shortened, and the piece rate is paid direct to the maker.
