T anoti started in 2012 as the songket weaving workshop of the former Queen of Malaysia, handed over with thirteen artisans and a mandate to keep the craft alive.
Songket is brocade. A second weft of gold or silver is laid in above the ground cloth and lifted thread by counted thread, which is why a shawl takes three weeks and why there has never been a faster way to do it.
Every loom at Tanoti House is a wooden floor loom. The weaver sets her own pace, is paid by the piece at above-market rates, and her name goes on the card that ships with the cloth.
